Tonight is a special night for Boston based online social network, Going.com. They’re throwing down a party for their home town as they start to promote the heck out their new name. They were formerly known as HeyLetsGo and changed their name a few months ago.

What is their niche you may ask? Well, they put themselves inbetween Myspace and Evite. In three cities – Boston, New York and San Francisco – you can go on to their site and find out just about all the cool happenings in each city. Anything from shows, parties or even beer pong tournaments. As a member you can create invitations and extend those invitations out to other members.
As a promotional tool, they’ve joined up with JetBlue to offer free airfare to Going.com members between the three cities through sweepstakes.

Tonights party in Boston is being held at the Mansion at 1 Boylston Place. The party is free to Going.com members, you just have to RSVP (click here to RSVP). While it’s free, you must get their early as it may fill up quick and they’ll turn you away if the bar is full, or make you wait.

It’s the last party in a three party series that Going.com kicked off in San Francisco on May 2nd and worked their way over to NYC for a party at Hiro Ballroom on May 10th where Albert Hammond Jr. played. Tonights gig brings Perez Hilton, the infamous Hollywood blogger, and Lady Sovereign, the self-destructing female rapper from the UK (read and watch her antics down in Brooklyn from Vegan).

Should be an interesting night.

PBJ gone Bluegrass

Dawn Landes

I’ve been listening to a bunch of country and bluegrass recently – Earl Scruggs, Merle Haggard, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Carter Family, etc – so I was quite pleased when I came across this remix of PB&J’s “Young Folks”.

Performing PB&J (Peter Bjorn and John for those out of the acronym loop) in bluegrass are Dawn Landes and We Sorta Tried bluegrass band. These fellas are from Austin, TX and Dawn is originally from Kentucky but now resides in NYC. While she’s a young artist, she has already had the pleasure to be apart of a Philip Glass, Ryan Adams and Joseph Arthur recording. As well as open for the likes of José Gonzalez, Suzanne Vega, Shannon Wright, Feist, Le Tigre and the one and only Andrew Bird.

She has also been recording and performing with musicians from the bands Hem and The Earlies.

Watch the recording of this version of “Young Folks” and pick up the track below:

Andrew Bird in Boston tonight

May 16, 2007 · Filed Under Live Show, News · Comment

It’s time once again for another live show in Boston. We’re doing a complete 180 from last Friday night where we had ourselves in the middle of a dance frenzy. Here, we’ll have ourselves in the middle of a instrument frenzy. Andrew Bird, the Chicago born farm boy that takes song writing to what I believe a new level.

He’s coming to Boston’s Berklee Performance Art center tonight at 8 pm and I’ll be front and center on the balcony, peering down at his finger picking and whistle blowing, trying to get the best shot I can of his virtuosity.

I managed to get a couple of decent shots last night at LCD but again, nothing spectacular with the Casio.

Once again, James Murphy and company were impressive. A bit more so this time around as James wasn’t sick and they’re nearing the end of the U.S. Tour as they head home to NYC tonight for the final show. At the Bowery show in March, which was the first LCD show for me, I was very impressed by the energy and leadership that James shows on stage. He is a very unassuming frontman but pulls it off with such gusto.

However, this time around, I found myself spying on Al Doyle, the guitarist from Hot Chip, who joined the Soundsystem for this tour. Al was on point with his cue’s and was even making sure that everyone else was too. He was counting out the beats and coming up to the drums and hitting every chord with as much force as a right hook from ALI.

Still, it was the James Murphy show. With his towel in one hand and mic in the other, he belts out every lyric like it was his last breathe. He’s all over the stage but usually hanging out right near the drums as it’s quite clear he has a small love affair with this instrument. He plays a role in just about every instrument that is on stage, which makes sense as he plays every instrument on his albums. It’s the little things, a note here and there on the keys, a symbal mute to help the drummer and even helping Al to conjure up some nasty feedback during their hard rock punk tune that James mentioned was something a bit different then the usual before they began to play.

As for the song that really hit home last night, hands down it was “All My Friends” that wins the prize. “Yeah” may come in a close second but when James starts ranting, “Where are your friends tonight, where are your friends tonight”, and he kept going and going and the crowd kept on giving back with their fist pumps it sent shivers up your spine.

All in all, just another amazing night of music with LCD and just writing about them makes me want to hop in my car, point it south and except that extra ticket offer that is floating down there amongst my NYC friends.

LCD Soundsystem – Tonight in Boston

May 11, 2007 · Filed Under Live Show, News, Video · Comment

Band: LCD Soundsystem
Venue: Avalon Ballroom
Date and Time: Tonight bitches and doors open at 6 and show is at 7. Remember, this is the Avalonn so be there on time as we’ll be kicked out promptly at 10 for their Avaland club night. The opening band is Yacht so that means LCD will most likely go on around 8. But I recommend catching Yacht if you can. It’s a one man shop, Jona Bechtolt from Portland, Oregon. Very experimental and good beats to warm up your dance move to.
Tickets: Don’t believe the show is sold out so get on it.

If you’re not going, I feel for your loss. Unless you don’t like to dance. Then I can understand. Don’t be afraid, this isn’t complex salsa dancing, this is let it all hang out dancing.

If you’re going tonight, look for the kid with fake snake skin colored Air Force One Nike’s on, that will be me. I’ll also have a little point and click digi that has been my replacement since I lost my last camera in NYC almost a year ago.

So lets get pumped. Here’s the North American Scum video to help turn those Friday afternoon jitters in to Friday afternoon dance grooves –

The Cribs – “Men’s Needs”

Off their upcoming release, Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever, this first single, “Men’s Needs”, has a familiar tone to it. In fact, when I first heard the chorus I immediately jumped on the comparison to a little known band from Austin, TX, Sound Team.

You remember those guys, right? The infamous Pitchfork had their way with Sound Team’s previous album, Movie Monster, but in my eyes it was a good record. Simple, easy and put together for the pure enjoyment of making music. If they hadn’t retaliated with their mock assasination video on YouTube then they may have gotten away with just a slip up in their recording. Instead, they came away pretty bruised as Pitchfork has a slight advantage over Sound Team when it comes to reaching the masses.

The Cribs, on the other hand, may have a shot at impressing the critics. And it would be for one reason and this reason only, their blatant focus on sex.

The band is made up of 3 brothers, two of which are twins, lead singer and guitarist Ryan Jarman and bass player Gary Jarman. The third brother, Ross Jarman, plays Drums. Ryan’s vocals, when he’s not screaming, are similar in style to Cassablanca’s from The Strokes, only more polished, not as rough around the edges and a bit higher in pitch. He approaches each word with the same laziness as Cassablanca and when he turns up the vocal engine his voice croons in to that familiar Sound Team scream that I mentioned earlier.

Remember when I said they have a blatant focus on sex, watch the video below for “Men’s Needs” and you’ll know what I’m talking about. There is apparently an uncensored version of this video out there so if you find it, let us know.

Tea Bags & Tizzle @ The Slip Show

A couple Friday’s ago The Slip played in San Francisco at The Independent. Some of you may know that I was once a big Slip fan, still am, and a friend from college recently was invited to play during their set break at this show. He has written a couple posts for The Square (click here to read) and recently he sent along the recording for this event.

Fred has been playing the guitar for a very long time and in college we use to play together a bunch. His guitar skills have always been impressive but his capability to sing and write a song were in development. And while these aren’t necessarily his songs, they sound like they could be. The songs were written by a long time Slip collaborator, Nathan Moore. Some of you may know Nathan from the Surprise Me Mr. Davis outfit, which consists of The Slip and Nathan. He is one of these mysterious song writers that, like Dylan and Cohen, is first and foremost a poet.

When The Slip got wind of these Moore covers played by Fred “Tweez” Torphy and Tim Lanterman, they jumped on the opportunity to have their crowd swooned by this duo.

Give it a listen, download, and let me know what you think.

Queens of the Stone Age – “3’s & 7’s”

Josh Homme started QOTSA back in 1997 with one idea in mind, to make guitar rock that pounded the heck out of the listener. Now, I’m not about to compare them to Led Zeppelin, but if there is anything good coming out of the mainstream music scene, these guys sure are on the list.

This track, “3’s and 7’s”, has definitely perked my interest in their up and coming release, Era Vulgaris, which will be release June 12th on Interscope Records.

The opening chord progression has a punk anthem sound to it which only lasts for a second as the main guitar riff enters in along with the vocals. It’s no question this band is driven by the overdrive guitar riff. No offense to the vocals but they just don’t stand out to me. I also maybe bia as I’ve been obsessed with the guitar ever since I heard Eddie Van Halen on MTV rip through one of his signature two-handed finger tap guitar solos (watch YouTube video of Eddie). The great thing about this song is that it’s a perfectly structured tune. They place the bridge in the perfect spot so as to keep the listener on their toes. As the bridge comes to an end, they build some nice tension with a single bass line that leads in to the guitar solo.
