Benjy Ferree & TT The Bears on 2/19 (Tonight)

Last minute concert update…

Benjy Ferree is a young new artist from Maryland whose sound falls around classic rock, Americana, folk and some rockabilly.   In his vocals I hear a slight pain similar to guys like Jeff Buckley.  However, I’m not going so far as to say his voice is up in Buckley’s range.

Benjy’s latest album was inspired by the rise and fall of Bobby Driscoll who played Peter Pan in the 1953 Disney movie.  As with many child actors, Bobby reached the age of purity and slowly but surely faded into thin air.  Like many other child actors, the end to Bobby’s story is not a happy one.  He was found dead at the tender age of 31 in 1968.  The police were unable to identify the body at the time so he was buried anonymously on New York’s Hart Island.  Yeah, pretty depressing.

As a child, Benjy was fascinated with the Peter Pan character played by Bobby so when he found out about his tragic story he was compelled to write this album, “Come Back To The Five and Dime, Bobby Dee Bobby Dee”.  Album was released on February 17th through Domino Records.

Hush Records says you better recognize Peter Broderick before it’s too late

Peter Broderick from Portland and beyond is getting a big push from his label to be better recognized by both their local community (Portland, OR) and the community at large in our country cause if we don’t act fast, Europe may take credit for his success.  Read the outcry from Chad Couch of Hush Records at www.hushrecords.com.

We have a chance to see Peter in action before the predicted explosion of Peter arrives, whether here or Europe, it’s for you to decide.

Brett Dennen at Paradise Rock Club (2/14)

Just a heads up for those last minute Valentines Day ideas, Brett Dennen from the birthplace of “peace, love and rock n’ roll”, San Fran, is playing the Paradise on Saturday.  Show is sold out but there’s always the craigslist approach: http://boston.craigslist.org/search/tix?query=brett+dennen&minAsk=min&maxAsk=max

The Phish and jam band gang appear to make up a good portion of his following but his sound is appealing to a wider audience then a typical jam band. Brett himself reminds us that there was a time that to be a good musician meant you had to have a good voice and that was all. No crazy style, don’t have to be the stereotypical good looking girl or guy. Just step right on up, pluck your guitar and let it all hang out.

Brett is also making an appearance on the CBS Early Show (8 am) this Saturday as a Valentines Day special.

Matthew Tow brings us The Lovetones

I must confess, I’ve never listened to Brian Jonestown Massacre.  However, I’m very intrigued to learn more about The Lovetones,  the side project of Matthew Tow, a former member of BJM.

They’ve already released three albums (2002, 2005 and 2006) and will add their fourth here in the states on February 24th called “Dimensions”, which already saw a release in the UK in November 2008.

For those who aren’t familiar with Matthew Tow or Brian Jonestown Massacre for that matter, he’s considered one of Australia’s most underrated songwriters.  Not saying that I know everything about music, but I do spend a lot of time listening and learning about new music, so the fact that I’m just getting into him now is a good sign of his underrated status.

Brian Jonestown Massacre is a group that has creeped around since the early 90′s in the indie rock realm.  Matthew played guitar for a short while and has contributed to their recordings ever since.  The Lovetones have also supported the BJM on their tours.

After my first listen of “Journeyman”, the first single off of “Dimensions”, I think it may be the year Matthew’s song writing skills break out.
