MOG Playlist – My Musical Heroes

MOG Music Network PlaylistI decided to take part in a little contest that MOG, the popular music streaming service, recently organized for it’s network of music bloggers as a promotional campaign. Pretty smart if you ask me from a marketing perspective. Hip2besquare has been a member of this network for around two years and while at first I didn’t go to the site very often, recently I’ve been finding myself heading there to listen to new releases or to delve into classics.

I’ve also been playing around with their mobile application which, besides letting you stream music, lets you download music temporarily to your phone’s memory as long as you’re a subscriber. To have both the mobile app and access to stream all the music online in full costs $10 bucks a month. I’ve started to contemplate ditching the eMusic account and going this route. I have found that I do own a lot of music that sits in my external hard drive collecting dust.MOG Mobile App for iPhone Being a music junky has it’s ups and downs and more often then not I get interested in a band for only a fleeting moment. It makes sense then to go through these phases and let the music be floating online versus taking up valuable space in my hard drive. When I make the decision to own the music I can walk down the street to my local record store or hit up Amazon for some DRM free MP3s.

The mix I created for this contest (which you can listen to here) focuses on what I consider to be my musical heroes of recent years. Going back to my sophomore year at college in 2000 and leading up to the end of the decade, I’ve seen my musical tastes expand – at times almost too much. But no matter what, I always come back to these tried and true sounds.

New Cut Copy track – Take Me Over (Listen)

Cut Copy – “Take Me Over” (Radio Edit) Premiere by modularpeople

This is the first single off their forthcoming album, Zonoscope, due out on Modular Records February 4th in Australia and on February 8th here in the states.

Cut Copy has also been documenting the making of their 3rd LP, which you can watch clips from over at their YouTube channel.

We’re looking forward to their world tour, which currently only has dates set for Europe. Last time I saw them was two years ago after their second album, In Ghost Colours, that blew them up into the next stratosphere. Make sure to keep an eye out for their dates and hope that they make Boston one of their stops. Just check out this video I shot from the Paradise show back in 2008 (turn volume down as it’s very bass heavy). Mind you this was a Monday night yet they were still able to replicate what it must be like inside a crazy Euro-club on a Saturday night.
