Local Natives @ Great Scott (5/8/10)

If you’re in a band, struggling to find your sound and cohesiveness, here’s an idea for you – move in together. Clearly this strategy has been working out for the Los Angeles based group Local Natives. Currently on a North American tour in support of their debut album, Gorilla Manors, the term cohesiveness sums up the essence of their music.

For those who own the album but have never seen them live, you’ll find it interesting that there never appears to be a single leader on stage. If there were a front man it would be the cymbal that stands in the middle of the stage that is abused throughout the night by any given member that happens to be situated next to it. If you’re just hearing about Local Natives, they take the “native” aspect of their name to heart by infusing their music with lots of poly-rhythmic activity. Something they say was only possible by establishing a deeper connection with each other through their living quarters.

Since they only have one album, the show was rather short, unlike the Wilco show from earlier last month. But what they did play they played with all their might. Coming off a New York City show, where they were told just hours before that a special guest would be making a visit to catch their act, they didn’t appear or sound tired. Warning Signs, a Talking Heads cover, is a perfect fit for Local Natives. It’s clear they take a great deal of inspiration from the legendary group and it appears through various in-person accounts that David Byrne was nodding approvingly during their rendition at the Bowery show. I’m sure all band members will remember fondly the time that David Byrne himself expressed interest in seeing their act. Who knows, there may even be a collaboration in their future – we all know how much David loves working with young acts (the creepiness in that sentence not intended).

Sun Hands closed us out for the night and had the place going crazy. Unfortunately that was the last and final song. As a young band, who I was told only has a few other EPs and songs that aren’t band favorites so they’re not playing them this tour, it can be tough to deliver live performance expectations. But with the energy they pack into the set they do have, you won’t need much more then what they give you. I’d love to see them come back during their next round of dates with a few extra tricks up their sleeves. Maybe a new cover or even better, some new material. As I’ve been told by many a bands, the road can often lead to some of the best song writing.

If you have the chance to catch them in action during the current tour, do yourself a favor, GO! You’ll be privy to a band whose future looks rather promising. Bostonians, we’ll see them again in August. As expected, they’re moving up in the world and will be headlining at the Middle East Downstairs on August 5th (Tix on sale now).

I failed to write down the first three songs but thanks to Ryan’s Smashing Life I have the completed set below:

  • Camera Talk
  • World News
  • Wild Eyes
  • Cards and Quarters
  • Shape Shifter
  • Warning Signs
  • Cubism Dream
  • Airplanes
  • Who Knows Who Cares
  • Sun Hands

This appears to be the set for their other shows as you can see over at NYC Tapers review. Download the live show as well at NYC Taper.

Ticket Giveaway – Anya Marina at Great Scott on 1/14

Anya Marina

Anya Marina is playing this week at Great Scott in Allston and we have a pair of tickets to give away to the one who can answer this brain buster…

What famous Austin, TX singer produced Anya’s album, “Slow & Steady Seduction: Phase II”, which is due out 1/20 on Chop Shop / Atlantic Records?

Either put your answers in the comments or send them to Kip AT Hip2besquare DOT net. The winner will be selected at random (if we have more then one that is). You can also send me a tweet over at my Twitter account: http://twitter.com/kipdog

At first listen, she sounds like the next KT Tunstall with a touch of Macy Grey’s raspy vocal style. However, I’ve been told that her live performance exposes her alternative talents which strays her away from the straight up pop sensibilities that make up artists like KT. Either way, she’s definitely got the voice and looks to make it big. So here’s your chance to catch her at a small venue.

A.A. Bondy at Great Scott Tomorrow (11/18)

For those Ryan Adams fans, keep on reading.

A.A. Bondy has surrounded himself with good company.  For starters, he’s on the label Fat Possum.  Home of the blues rock duo, Black Keys, the virtuoso Andrew Bird (who just announced his new album, “Noble Beast”, will be available on January 27th through Fat Possum) and a hip2besquare favorite, Gil Mantera’s Party Dream.

He also toured with the likes of Bon Iver and a recent favorite of the square, Delta Spirit out of San Diego.

On his debut release, “American Hearts”, The Felice Brothers make an appearance and if you know me you know how much I dig these cats off of the Team Love label.  To put it simply, A.A. Bondy is someone worth checking out.  I’ve been giving him a few listens.  He’s got a Ryan Adams vibe and a dash of Dylan when he brings the harmonica out to play.  Althought unlike Ryan who writes a thousand songs a minute and lets records fly like they’re going out of style, A.A. has a nice collection of songs on American Hearts and all are worthy of the deep American singer/songwriter tradition.

Last Minute: Illinois and Hallelujah the Hills at Great Scott Tonight!

Alright, I can stop screaming now about the Phillies becoming the World Series Champs.  Voice is a little raspy but it was worth it.

To break my silence, I’m quickly posting about a show tonight at the Great Scott that I’m recommending you check out if you have nothing else better to do.

Illinois is a band from Doylestown, PA.  You may be saying to yourself, “wait a minute, Kip’s just promoting these guys cause they’re from PA and are probably Phillies fans so I’m not going to listen to this recommendation.”  Well, part of me does have a soft spot for PA based groups such as Brighblakck Morning Light, Dr. Dog, Black Moth Super Rainbow, The A-Sides, and must bands on Park The Van records.  But that doesn’t mean these bands don’t have talent.

Illinois is a clydoscope of music.  Sometimes you’ll get noise and sampled sounds along with a little banjo thrown in for good measure.  Sometimes you’ll get soft pop rock.  They remind me of Ween in this sense.  It also helps that they grew up in a similar town as Ween.  The Ween boys grew up in New Hope, PA, a town that’s very rural and like Doylestown, it has this All American, down home, farmer joe and in their own words, “…where little league children still ride their bicycles in the street and the first girl you kissed is now your wife”, vibe to it.

The openers should be familiar to you, Hallelujah the Hills.  We’ve featured them on the square often.  Really enjoyed their debut LP, “Collective Psychosis Begone”.  Caught them opening for Silver Jews a little while back at the Middle East Downstairs.  They’re a tricky opening band because of their intensity.  They really give it their all no matter if they’re playing for 5 minutes or 50 minutes.  I say tricky because it can throw you off guard if you’re not ready.  So prepare yourself accordingly if you plan to catch their opening set, which I recommend you do.
