Hot Chip

Hot Chip

What’s fascinating about Hot Chip is how much their style evolves from album to album yet some how they manage to keep the unique Hot Chip sound in tact. What is the sound you ask? It’s the sound of electrical pulses hitting you from every dimension – 1st, 2nd, 3rd and even the 4th – which forces your body to react. Some react positively while others gasp at the electronic cross over attempt. I for one was never a big electronic music fan. I’ve always been a sucker for the classic four-piece rock band – lead guitar, bass, drummer and either rhythm guitar or keyboard player. But Hot Chip has managed to combine the best of both worlds. They usually don’t use a drummer in the studio, leaving the masterful beat making up to Felix but every now and then they’ll recruit a friend to hit the skins at their live shows such as Pat Mahoney (also plays for DFA’s LCD Soundsystem project) during their 2007 fall tour.

One of my more memorable moments as a music blogger was when I had the pleasure of interviewing Joe Goddard when they played at the Paradise Rock Club in 2008 in support of their last album, Made in the Dark.

I’ll never forget the first show at Great Scott in 2006 on a random Monday night. I had only heard about them from a Philly friend who described their sound as being super chill. Chill was the last thing on their minds this night. The Warning, the follow up to Coming on Strong, had yet to be released in the states but it was a clear departure from their laid back style on Coming on Strong. This first ever stop in Boston had the band testing out their new songs and when we walked out of that show we had sweat stained clothes and big grins on our faces. I, or rather we, became instant fans and have been ever since.

Members:
Joe Goddard – vocals, synthesizer, percussion
Alexis Taylor – vocals, synthesizer, guitar, percussion, piano
Felix Martin – drum machines, synthesizer
Al Doyle – guitar, synthesizer, percussion, backing vocals
Owen Clark –guitar, bass, synthesizer

2009 Album: No album
They have an album coming out in 2010 called One Life Stand. Listen to the first single, “Take It In”.

Got me hooked: The Warning

Bonus Video: This is from the show in April 2008 where we interviewed Joe Goddard before hand. Amazing show. This is “Crap Kraft Dinner” off of Coming on Strong. The song builds and builds to a climax that always gets the house rocking. It’s common to hear them throw in the Fleetwood Mac song, “Everywhere”, at the beginning during their shows, which they do here.

Over the past few years we’ve seen various bands go from zeros to heros in a matter of minutes. Success in the music business varies depending on who you’re talking to. Some want it all and some are happy if just one of their songs, albums or jingles gets recognition. For the sake of this post, lets just say success is when you decide to record some songs for your girlfriend for Valentines Day and having those songs turn into a six song EP which eventually gets passed around, has you land some gigs at Pianos in Manhattan, play some showcases at CMJ and then get signed by a major (Columbia Records, UK), all in less then a year.

Passion Pit are Michael Angelakos, Ian Hultquist, Ayad al Adhamy, Jeff Apruzzese and Nate Donmoyer. They all knew each other from Emerson College in downtown Boston and are slowly but surely becoming top players in the electronic pop world along side LCD Soundsystem and the 2008 newbies, MGMT.

Back in 2007 I was introduced to M. Ward with Post-War. And just like last year, I’m late to the party of another M. Ward creation. Only difference, this year his creation was helped by an unlikely songstress, the actress Zooey Deschanel, the actress most famously known for her role along side Will Ferrell in the Christmas classic, Elf (and now most famously known for getting engaged to Ben Gibbard if your an indie kid).

I knew of She & Him for sometime but failed to connect the M.Ward dot. How I missed this major detail is beyond me. I remember Aquarium Drunkard posting their live recordings from their “wet and wild” set at this year’s Newport Folk Festival. However, I didn’t pick up the album till about a month ago.

While it’s a late addition to my listening cycle, it’s definitely showing promise of a trusty stand by. Besides M. Ward’s ingenious arrangement of classic songs, Zooey’s vocals are a comfort during every listen. Her ability to change her vocal style is impressive as well. She’ll throw in some country, lounge, jazz and has a very distinct Peggy Lee sound.

The stand out song of the album is their cover of the Beatles tune, “I Should Have Known Better”. They completely changed up the tempo, creating a slow waltz with Hawaiian style slide guitar playing out the melody. Not since the Grey Album when Danger Mouse successfully combined the Beatles White Album with Jay-Z’s Black Album, has a Beatles song sounded so good outside it’s original format.

Jason Collett – “Here’s to Being Here”

The boys and girls in Broken Social Scene may be some of the hardest working musicians in the business.  Even when they’re not officially pumping out their own albums, each band member is in some way creating new sounds.  This year it was Jason Collett and Brendan Canning (who we’ll talk about soon) that lead the pack in 2008.

Jason’s music has a distinct similarity to Tom Petty.  He’s got that slight nasal tone and a rocking guitar to boot.  Any fan of Petty would be hard pressed not to go out and give this one a shot.

Unlike Jason, Brendan’s sound rings true to the BSS method – loud, sprawling riffs with soaring vocal lines.  I would also throw in cinematic to describe Brendan’s work here with hints of classic rock brewing in the background, as is the case with most BSS albums.  The odd man out on this album is “Love Is New”.  Here Brendan conjures up Talking Heads and produces one of the albums more straightforward grooves and helps to add some depth to the sound of the album as a whole.

AA Bondy – “American Hearts”

Some of you may know Scott Bondy from his previous work in Verbena, a late 90’s indie rock band that some critics had herald as the next Nirvana and Scott as the next Cobain.  Unfortunately I was not an “in-the-know” music man back then but what I know now is Scott has dropped the grundge icons appeal and now applies a different icon to his sound, Bob Dylan.

While us critics can always stand back and make comparisons, in the end, a good musician will differentiate themselves through creative lyrics and melodies and in my opinion, AA is one of those musicians.  Lets face it, it was clearly the year for modern day America folk music or as some critics like to call it, the nu-folk movement.  AA Bondy’s solo debut, while nothing spectacular, helps make this case even stronger.

Hot Chip – “Made In The Dark”

Those who know me know that I’m a Hot Chip freak.  I’ve been trying to convert both friends and family for a few years now.  So I was especially excited this past year when I got the chance to interview one of the founding members, Joe Goddard, before their amazing show at the Paradise Rock Club.  This may or may not have been a good idea given how much of a fan and nerd I am about their music.  But by the looks of both Joe and the other founding member, Alexis Taylor, they have some nerd in them as well.

What struck me the most about Hot Chip this past year was their refined live sound.  During my interview with Joe, he talked about how the band has been practicing alot and perfecting their live performance.  There’s a good and bad side to this.  The good of course is all the transitions, song extensions and changes are flawless.  The bad is the room for improvisation goes away.  The argument you can make is that with a band like Hot Chip, where you have several members and lots of intstruments and sounds to manage, having an improvisation session on stage can get confusing.  While it’s enjoyable to the player, the listener may get lost.  Unless you’re hopped up on a slew of drugs where it doesn’t matter what you’re playing as long as it’s got a beat.

“Made In the Dark” brought about some of the best produced songs Hot Chip has done to date.  “Ready For the Floor”, “One Pure Thought”, and “Touch Too Much” were three of my favorites.  Yet it’s not the album I turn to the most.  You could make a strong argument that “The Warning” is their best studio work but for me, “Coming On Strong” is my trusty stand by.

You can say what you want about one hit wonders or songs that conjure up special moments from the past but to me, albums are like your best friends.  They’re there to calm you down, pick you back up or help celebrate life accomplishments.  But most importantly, they help keep you moving in the right direction.

Bob Dylan – “Bootleg Series: Vol. 8″

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/bobdylan

Listen and Download “Mississippi”: (Download)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Besides Tom Waits, Dylan is one of the greatest inspirations not only to artists who strive to play music as long as he (good music that is), but also for the listener.  The fact that he can continue expressing his emotions in such a pure way to the world is a testament to humanity.

This is not the Dylan your mom and dad grew up with on the eightth volume of Columbia Records “Bootleg Series”.  Or is it?  Besides the raspy, smoke damaged vocal chords that modern day Dylan has to deal with, the same passion and genius is there in his lyrics.  All songs you here are from 1988 and onward.  Pretty impressive considering this kid was making heads turn (including the Man in Black, God rest is soul) back in the late 50’s.

I think this is a good place to end the list.

Worthy Albums of 2008

There are plenty of albums I didn’t mention in my lists that I would have liked to but this here blogger just doesn’t have the time.  Here is a list of albums worth your time:

Ra Ra Riot – “The Rhumb Line”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/rarariot

Notes: Gained cred during last years CMJ and released their debut without any disappointments to discuss.

The Black Keys – “Attack and Release”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/theblackkeys

Notes: Best blues rock duo alive right now and plop in one of the best djs/producers in Danger Mouse and you’ve got a winning combination.

Black Mountain – “In The Future”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/blackmountain

Notes: Yeah, acid folk rock at it’s best.

The Walkmen -”You & Me”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/thewalkmen

Notes: This is how SoCal should sound only these guys are from NYC.

Dr. Dog – “Fate”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/drdog

Notes: A great album and they’re from Philly.  Enough said.

The Watson Twins – “Fire Songs”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/thewatsontwins

Notes: Great cover of the Cure’s “Just Like Heaven”

Girl Talk – “Fee the Animals”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/girltalkmusic

Notes: There’s genius in his precision to tie both old and new pop songs together.

The Felice Brothers – “The Felice Brothers”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/thefelicebrothers

Notes: Think party Bob Dylan part The Band.  Great energy in their live performance.

Atlas Sound – “Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/bradfordcox

Notes: Deerhunter’s lead man, Bradford Cox, stones the listener even if you’re not one to inhale.

Quite Village – “Silent Movie”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/quietvillage

Notes: One word, Chill.

Fuck Buttons – “Street Horrrsing”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/fuckbuttons

Notes: One phrase, fucked up noise rock.

The Dodos – “Visiter”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/thedodos

Notes: Another power duo from Cali except unlike Two Gallants who hail from the north, these two bring us that SoCal flavor.  Some good yelling going on here.

Stephen Malkums & The Jicks – “Real Emotional Trash”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/stephenmalkmus

Notes: It’s hard not to love this album if you’re a guitar player.

Delta Spirit – “Ode To Sunshine”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/deltaspirit

Notes: Blew us away opening for Dr. Dog.  We were also trashed upon entering the venue so who knows.  But seriously, keep an eye on these guys.  Not going to say too much cause I don’t want another Cold War Kids on our hands and since they’re already from SoCal, the ingredients are in place for such a thing to happen.

Discovered Albums of 2008

There are always a few albums that I pick up that are from past years.  This does not include very old recordings such as the Cocteau Twins album I picked up or the Jimmy Smith recording I got.  Those are by default most likely classics.

Great Lake Swimmers – “Onigara”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/greatlakeswimmers

Notes: Highly underrated album and artist.  New album out in 2008.

Phosphorescent – “Pride”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/phosphorescent

Notes: Think bon fire style sing alongs and add in some Native American chanting and you’ve got this album.  Perfect for popping on during plane rides.  Little glass of wine and this album, you’ll be sleeping sweet dreams.

The Ruby Suns – “The Ruby Suns”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/therubysuns

Notes: I was unable to get Sea Lions, which was their 2008 album.  So instead, I got this prior release.  Plenty good from this New Zealand outfit.

The Glands – “The Glands”

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/theglands123

Notes: Yet another great rock group from Atlanta.  A mix between Tom Petty and Yo La Tengo if you can belive it.  No joke, the guy definitely sounds like Ira from time to time on this album.

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND WE’LL SEE YOU IN 2009!

Hot Chip @ Paradise – Boston, MA 4/14/08 Plus Interview w/ Joe Goddard

April 18, 2008 · Filed Under Interview · 2 Comments

I’ve been blogging now for roughly 3 or so years and there is no question that this recent experience where I was able to interview one of the founding members of Hot Chip, Joe Goddard, on top of the show on Monday night was a pinnacle point in my blogging and music review career. Keep in mind folks, I don’t get paid for this. Many bloggers don’t get paid, we just really love doing what we do and getting to go to shows, getting free music and getting to interview our idols.

Below is both a transcript of the interview plus a little 3 and 1/2 minute montage that I pulled together by taking some of my favorite moments of the interview and putting them to pictures that I mostly found on Flickr. I’ve included a link to all those folks who are responsible for the amazing pictures taken at various Hot Chip concerts. And some of the pictures are just basic stock photos of the band.

Enjoy the montage and interview with Joe Goddard and if you’re just getting hip to Hot Chip, enjoy the ride.

Chip break, Spain, 80’s

February 9, 2008 · Filed Under Randomness · Comment

Hip NewsSo I’ve been on a business trip in Las Vegas this past week and I’m about to head out to Spain on Tuesday for a little vacation with Amanda. Pretty pumped for Spain. So with all this travel that obviously means that my posting is going to suffer.

First, let me just say that Hot Chip will be absent from the square as I have been overloading on them as of late. But if you know me, you know how passionate I can get about a single band, especially a band that moves me as much as Hot Chip does during their live shows. We do have some pictures from this past show in New York City that I will post but I won’t be giving any indepth review of that show.

My only thoughts about the show were that I had fun and I was very drunk. Started with the libations around 12 as I met the rents at JG Melons, had a drink at Sptizer’s near the Cake Shop where we attempted to see the free Teenagers show, and then kept the drinking going until the show at Highline at 9:30. Putting aside my toxic level, I will say that it wasn’t my favorite Chip show. They seemed a bit off. However, even an off night for Hot Chip is still a night of fun and dance. Just like the ‘Fork review said, even though this wasn’t their break out performance, they’re still a dominate force.

This 80’s radio / remix blog contacted me and if you’re a child of the 80’s like I, then you must check out this site and download some of their mixes. Most of them are of the female 80’s artists such as Madonna and Olivia Newton-John, but they have some great 80’s resources and stuff that makes for great late night dance parties.

Visit Retro Remixes: http://retro-remixes.blogspot.com/

Another rock n roll revival band that I’m sure you heard of (if you live in NYC) that made it in my inbox is The Teenage Prayers. At first, I’m not totally vibing the lead singer’s, Tim Adams, approach to the whinny, off key rock vocal style. However, a Philly soul rock legend, Solomon Burke, sees something in these fellas to the point where he produced their first EP, Ten Songs. And on their follow up album, Everyone Thinks You’re the Best, the founder of the Dream Syndicate, Steve Wynn, steps up to produce. So while they’re not standing out as this overly impressive rock revival band that some other folks are saying, they definitely seem worth more of a listen.

Hot Chip: Made in the Dark album review

February 1, 2008 · Filed Under Album Review · 4 Comments

Made in the Dark ALbum cover

Hot Chip
Made in the Dark (EMI / Astralwerks)
Release: Feb. 5, 2008 (US) and Feb. 4, 2008 (UK)
Recommendable to people who: Like Hot Chip, can handle drum machine versus real drums from time to time, like to dance, fan of krautrock, fans of funky electronic soul, experimental music

Sometimes a band comes along at just the right moment. Sometimes a band takes those moments and instead of just reveling in its present glory (cause, it’s not horrible to enjoy the fruits of your labor), it thinks of the future and how they plan to keep themselves going. How they can keep it fresh while at the same time echoing their past experiences that have brought them to this moment.

To me, Hot Chip is a band that embodies such a group.

Those familiar with the fivesome from London probably know them as the tongue and cheek electro pop crew that is both prolific in the studio, whether mixing their own songs or their peers, and have exceptional chops during their live acts. In fact, it’s their latter talent, their ability to take live shows to the next level, that has helped contribute to the direction Made in the Dark has taken.

You’re probably wondering if they sound completely different. Do they get serious? Have they toned down the electronic influences?

My response is that they do sound different. They do get serious and at times they have toned down the electro craziness. But, as mentioned above, that doesn’t mean they’ve left these influences out to dry.

The first few moments of the album come at us like a ton of bricks. And I mean you’re hit pretty hard. By now I’m sure most of you have heard the Todd Rundgren produced track, “Shake A Fist”, and “Ready for the Floor”. However, I’m sure most have not heard the album opener, “Out At the Pictures”. It starts off with an electronic pulse that buzzes in your ear until the first synth line comes chugging away like a train gaining speed. Almost as if it’s revving up the album’s engines and preparing for the long and bumpy road ahead. Finally, in comes the drum and bass which at first gives us some break beat wildness where we’re not sure where to put our feet. Then, right as the break beat, breaks, the beat comes back in with a fluid “four on the floor” disco pulse that helps guide your toes and off we go to dance city.

After getting slammed in the face with the first three tracks, the show stopper, “Bendable Poseable”, sends us for a whirl. It’s not the most danceable little bugger on the album nor the most attractive. But it has it’s moments. It has the Hot Chip cheekiness we’re all use to with the wacky vocal tweeks and 80’s geek outs. I swear I can hear a sound bite from the Labyrinth soundtrack in here some where.

“We’re Looking For A Lot of Love” is the reason you’ve probably heard that there is more soul influences on Made in the Dark then on Coming on Strong or The Warning. This is the kind of song you buy subwoofers for. The bass soothes your ear as Alexis’ vocals reel us in. Awesome stuff.

With just the first few tracks under our belt it’s clear to us that Hot Chip is taking their experiences on the road and infusing them with their studio work. Many songs include sections that are clearly meant for exploration. One of the amazing feats of Hot Chip is their ability to pull you so in to their songs that they will introduce new beats or new melodies that weren’t even related to the song from the get go yet it all seems very congruent.

It’s tough to pinpoint who is doing what in the band besides Alexis’ vocal work but it’s very well known that Al Doyle (guitar, synthesizer, percussion) brings a higher level of musicianship then any other member. If you happened to catch LCD Soundsystem live during the 2007 tour of the immaculate album, Sound of Silver, you then saw Al playing guitar. One thing I noticed during the show here in Boston was how Al seemed to take control in the background of the timing between all the musicians, tapping his head, pointing to his guitar and counting off the beat with his fingers. Most of the guitar riffs you hear are crafted by Owen Clarke, a good portion of the programming is on the shoulders of Felix Martin but in the end, it’s the energy that brought founding members Joe Goddard and Alexis Taylor together at the Elliot School in Putney, London that drives the force behind Hot Chip.

The move towards a more serious Hot Chip is heard loud and clear on the title track, “Made in the Dark”. With it’s slow groove (another shout out to their love for soul) and Alexis’ careful treatment to the delivery of each word, this song is no joke.

As the first half of the album was a sure sign that the party is just getting started, the last half is exactly the opposite. You can hear it in the vocals…

it was a really long time ago when you were a friend of mine, and I would really like you to know it would ease my mind, I would hold you up again, if you asked me” (“Touch To Much”)

You it hear it in the music. You hear it in their energy (“One Pure Thought”), both high and low (“In the Privacy of our Love”). I can just picture the lighters waving during the latter song, which closes out the set…ahem, I mean, album.

This flow fits the mold of any perfectly structured live show. The fact that a majority of the album was recorded in their own space and often times, recorded in one take, goes to show how comfortable they feel playing with each other.

In fact, if they came out this Saturday night in New York City at the Highline Ballroom and played the entire album, front to back, I wouldn’t care. In fact, I would be very, very happy.
